LIBRARY PROFILE:
The Municipal Library of Kalibo caters primarily to the needs of the general reading public. Its collection and services are geared to students, scholars, researchers, and readers to avail of its facilities. As an educational institution, it provides the people the access to information and cultural development of the community. The putting up of this reading center is vitally needed in order to cultivate reading among the town’s people and the neighboring town.
The library was first established in 1949 by Don Digno Alba as the founder under the administration of the late Mayor Ludovico O. Peralta
Because of the vital need to improve library services and to help the students especially the out of school youth, it was transferred several times before it has acquired the present location.
The Kalibo Municipal Library transferred to its present site last January 27, 2006 at the Capt. Gil Mijares Building, corner XIX Martyrs and Rizal Streets, Kalibo, Aklan, fronting the town Plaza. It was constructed through the effort of former Congresswoman Gabrielle “Billie” Calizo from her Priority Development Assistance Fund as she envisioned to provide a more spacious and highly modernized library in the Province of Aklan, conducive for learning. The Municipal Library construction project was constructed but the Committee tasked to supervise and regulate the use of the said building swapped the intended location of the library to that of a Social Hall, a much smaller space where the present library is now located. The swapping was accepted despite the effort of the former Library-in-Charge and the former Vice Mayor Nilda B. Tambong to occupy the intended portion so as not to hamper the library services to the public. It was in October 2008 that Vice-Mayor Tambong appealed to the Mayor to allow the use of the “Social Hall” as a reading area when it is not in use since three large bookshelves were added and the remaining spaces is not enough for the tables and chairs. It is fortunate that the appeal was granted.
At present, the library was manned and maintained by (3) personnel: One (1) Librarian II -In-Charge and two (2) Administrative Aide. It has a total floor area of 19.3 x 7.0 square meters excluding the office of the librarian and with a sitting capacity of 100. Library opens Monday- Friday at 9:00 o’clock in the morning and closes at 6:00 in the evening with no noon break. This is to give enough time for the readers and students to cope with their research work/assignments. Personnel in the library are on their flexible time from Monday to Friday. Book collection relied mostly to the book allocated by the National Library which was a big help to our readers and from the funds allocated for the purchase of books by the Sangguniang Bayan of Kalibo. Voluminous books were also donated by the Pastrana Foundation and also by some people of Kalibo who showed concern and responded to the library program of the municipality.
