HISTORY OF KALIBO
The proud ancient town of Kalibo is the growth of the town of Madyanos, Founded by Datu Bangkaya, his wife Katurung and his two sons Balengkaka and Balenghaga and his group of 200 men . women and children on the second” Tagbu-Eukad (Saturday) of Dagangkahoy (February)in the year 1213.
The Precursor of Kalibo, Madyanos, was in its glory the center for intellectual, cultural, spiritual and political life and pursuits not only in the “minuro” or “sakop” of Akean, but in the whole area of confederation of Madyaas, as well. Historians Felix Regalado and Quintin B. Franco in their book “History of Panay” attributed to Datu Bangakaya the start of formal public instruction in entire Panay including the invention of a syllabic form of writing similar to ABAKADA, and the existence of all written laws for the entire confederation including the code of sumakwill. Madyanos in its glory was already engaged in foreign trade, exporting pottery, metal craft and cloth especially pina cloth perfumeries household utensils, gold and jewels, but the significant gain of the era however was the ship-building industry that brought the goods of the confederation to distant harbors worldwide.
